Houston houses are built on slab. There is no basement to put a theater in, so almost every private cinema in this city ends up in a bonus room over the garage, a converted formal living room, or a room drawn for the purpose before the slab is poured. The room decides the design long before the equipment does.

Slab, no basement, and three ways in.
Bonus room over the garage. The most common location in Houston and the least forgiving — the floor is a joist span over an uninsulated garage, so bass leaves through the structure and heat arrives through the ceiling. It needs isolation at the floor and a plan for the heat before anyone talks about speakers.
The converted formal. Hard floors, a tall ceiling and often a window wall — three things a theater does not want. It becomes a good room once it is treated, and treating it properly is most of the work.
Drawn from scratch. In new construction the room is laid out to the seating rather than the other way round. Riser height, screen geometry and speaker placement get confirmed at design development, which is the difference between a cinema and a room with a projector in it.
